Cathy Lee CRANE has been making hybrid films since 1994. She was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in 2013 for her lyrical re-combinations of archival and staged material and received a survey of her work in 2015 as part of the American Original Now series at the National Gallery of Art. Her first feature The Manhattan Front www.themanhattanfront.com will be released in late 2017. It was chosen to be “On the Radar” by Creative Capital in 2014. Her film Pasolini’s Last Words (2012) was supported through grants from the New York State Council on the Arts and the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Film. The film enjoyed its World premiere at the Festival du Nouveau Cinema in Montreal as a “gem of world cinema” and was released on DVD by Salzgeber Medien/Berlin. It screened at the Cinematheque Francais in Paris and at Arsenal in Berlin as part of their Pasolini/Roma exhibits. In addition to her short work, she produced the experimental biography Unoccupied Zone: The Impossible Life of Simone Weil (2006) that is distributed by Films Media Group, the largest educational distributor for the Humanities in North America. In 2006 it won the Jury Award in Narrative at the University Film and Video Association and then went on to tour the Southern Circuit. She continues to work as director of photography and projection designer for many artists, most notably for Harun Farocki’s documentary and first fine art installation I Thought I was Seeing Convicts (2000) and Nikki Appino and Saori Tsukada’s Club Diamond, an experimental theatre piece that premiered at the Public Theatre’s Under the Radar showcase in January 2017 supported by the Sundance Institute. Crane has been awarded the Border Arts Residency in 2017/18 where she will produce a new work about the Mexican Borderlands. She will continue to work on this project at the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Residency as their 2018 Arts and Literary Arts Fellow. Crane is Associate Professor in the Department of Cinema and Photography at Ithaca College.
